Privacy Policy
For the Kuzushi AAC app on iOS and Android. Last updated 7 August 2026.
The short version
- By default, Kuzushi AAC runs entirely on your device. There is no account and no sign-up, and the app makes no network requests of its own.
- Used that way, it collects nothing about you — no profile, no identifiers, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting — and it doesn’t send what you type anywhere.
- Nothing is sold, shared or transferred to anyone. In default use there is nothing collected to sell.
- You can optionally point the app at a separate speech server. This feature is off by default, and entirely optional. If you do use a speech server, some data may be shared with the server provider — check with the server’s administrator for more details.
1. Who this is, what it covers, and the two ways the app can be used
Kuzushi AAC is an augmentative and alternative communication app — a speaking aid. It is made and maintained by one person, Emma, as a personal project. You can reach me at kuzushi@emma.dev.
This policy covers the Kuzushi AAC app for iOS and Android, and this website.
There are two ways the app can be used, and the rest of this policy depends on which one you are in.
- Default — offline. This is how the app installs, how it launches, and how it stays unless you go and change it. There is no account, no sign-up and no connection to me: the app speaks using your device’s own speech engine, and Kuzushi AAC doesn’t send what you type anywhere.
- Optional — connected to a server of your choice. The app can be pointed at a compatible speech server. Doing so takes deliberate setup: you must enter the server’s address and credentials for it yourself. If you set this up, text you have spoken is sent to that server.
2. What Kuzushi AAC collects
In default, offline use: nothing. Nothing is gathered about you and nothing is sent to me.
3. What is stored on your device
Kuzushi AAC stores its own working data locally, in the app’s private storage:
- Your boards — the phrases on the tiles, including every change you make and any board you create. These start as the boards shipped with the app and become yours as you edit them.
- Your settings — the chosen voice, speaking rate and volume, text sizes, display-mode preferences and similar.
- Cached audio — phrases played may be cached temporarily on your device. This lets you play them again with even less delay. This cache stays on your device and is private to the app. You can clear it at any time from the settings menu.
- The history list stores phrases you have said in the current session so that you can select them and play them back again. The history list stays on your device, and you can clear it at any time from the settings menu.
4. What this policy does NOT cover
Kuzushi AAC can use the built-in text-to-speech software that comes with your phone. To speak a line, it hands the text to that software. This policy does not cover any speech synthesis software that I didn’t make: what happens to the text once it is handed over is up to whoever makes that software, and is described by their privacy policy rather than by mine.
Your app store. The app is distributed by Apple and Google, so installing it is something you do with them rather than with me. Whatever they collect in the course of that is theirs and is covered by their privacy policies, not this one. What I can say is what reaches my end: the figures I can see in their dashboards are aggregate counts — installs and the like — and none of it tells me who you are.
This website is a set of static pages hosted on GitHub Pages. The pages themselves set no cookies, run no scripts, embed nothing from anywhere else and do not track you. The serving of them is GitHub’s rather than mine, so whatever they record in the course of it is described by their privacy statement, not this one.
5. Deleting your data
Your boards, settings and cached audio live in the app’s own storage. Uninstalling Kuzushi AAC removes all of it permanently. You can also clear cached audio from inside the app, and reset a board to how it shipped.
If you have configured a server, any account you hold on it lives on that server and not in the app — uninstalling does not remove it. Ask that server’s operator to delete it, or delete it yourself if the server is yours.
6. If you connect Kuzushi AAC to a server
Kuzushi AAC can optionally be pointed at a compatible speech server, for people who run one. This is off unless you deliberately configure it, is not part of normal use, and requires you to enter a server address and your own credentials for it — no server address is built into the app, and there is no default one to connect to.
If (and only if) you configure a server, data from the app may be sent to that server, including text, boards, and usage, diagnostic, and error information. Check with the server operator for their privacy policy.
7. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at https://kuzushi.emma.dev/privacy/ with a new date at the top.
